Recycling

Can the can

Did you know Australians use 3.5 billion aluminium cans each year? Of these, 2.5 billion are returned for recycling while the rest end up in landfill. That is about 15 million kilograms of aluminium or the equivalent of 11,500 family sedans being dumped in a hole every year.
Making aluminium cans is also very energy intensive and recycling just one aluminium can saves enough electricity to run a TV set for 3 hours.
Traditional public place recycling systems (i.e. two bins, one for general waste and one for recycling) have not worked well in the past for a number of reasons. So this year the Great Escape is introducing a new recycling system which involves a container deposit.

How does it work?

It is very simple really, and will not cost you a cent if you follow the 5 easy steps below. Plus you will be helping to save valuable resources and the environment:

1. When you go to the bar to buy a drink, included in the price of the drink is a $1.00 deposit;
2. Once you have finished your drink, take your container (aluminium can or PET plastic bottle) to one of 3 recycling centres located close to each of the main bars;
3. Hand over your container (or containers) to receive a drink ticket valued at $1.00 (i.e. $1.00 for each container handed back to the recycling centre staff);
4. You can then use this drink ticket to go towards part of the cost of your next drink or simply redeem your $1.00 by handing the drink ticket to the bar staff; and
5. At the end of the night, hand back your last drink container before you leave at one of the recycling centres. Take your $1.00 drink ticket and redeem it at the bar to get your original $1.00 back.

Remember to redeemed any deposits before the close of the event. Refunding your container deposit after the event is not possible.

The Great Escape audience generates tens of thousands of cans and plastic bottles each year. We believe the new system will capture the vast majority of drink containers for recycling. So this year we encourage you to have a fantastic show while helping to do your bit to reduce the event’s environmental footprint.
